About Esophageal Disease

The esophagus is a tube that connects the throat to the stomach, allowing food and liquid to pass through to be digested. Muscular rings (sphincters) at each end open and close as food passes through, and contractions along the esophagus move food and drink down into the stomach.

Esophageal diseases can cause food or stomach acid to rise back up, or regurgitate, or make it difficult to swallow. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to restore proper function or relieve chronic symptoms. Some digestive conditions are associated with increased risk for serious diseases like cancer of the esophagus.
