Columbia’s Division of Surgical Oncology is dedicated to leading the field of cancer surgery through top-quality clinical care, academic excellence, and pioneering research.
Patient Care
Columbia’s Division of Surgical Oncology offers patients a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and recovery from sarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), other soft tissue tumors, stomach and gastroesophageal junction cancer, other gastrointestinal tumors, melanoma, neuroendocrine tumors, spleen tumors, and lymphoma. We bring our patients the full range of surgical procedures and techniques, and as part of Columbia’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, we also offer a collection of nonsurgical programs designed to help guide and support our patients through every step of their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Some of our state-of-the-art offerings include proton beam radiation and aggresive surgery for sarcomas, and minimally invasive robotic gastrectomy for stomach cancer.

Research
Through research and clinical trials, we are continually seeking to advance the science of cancer care. This allows us to gain a better understanding of these disease so that we can develop safer and more effective treatments.
Gemini
Dr. Sandra Ryeom and Dr. Sam Yoon also belong to the Gastroesophageal Malignancies Investigator Network Initiative or GEMINI. GEMINI is a consortium of academic scientists and oncologists who are working to discover new therapies for gastroesophageal cancer.
Stand Up To Cancer
Surgeons and scientists in Columbia’s Department of Surgery are advancing efforts for early detection of gastric cancer for tomorrow's patients, while providing the best possible care for today's patients. A team of Columbia’s researchers and physicians, co-led by Sandra Ryeom, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Division of Surgical Sciences and including Dr. Sam Yoon, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and an international, interdisciplinary team of experts in gastric cancer, advanced imaging, & molecular biomarkers were recently awarded a $3 million Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) grant (https://standuptocancer.org/research/research-portfolio/research-teams/gastric-cancer-interception-research-team/) to analyze novel diagnostic tests that can detect gastric cancer earlier than current modalities.
