Living Donor Liver Transplantation Program

About Living Donors  |  Conditions We Treat  |  Our Team  |  Resources & Guides  |  Contact

Our Living Donor Liver Transplantation Program is one of the largest and most successful in the country. Data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients shows that our results well exceed national outcomes for living donor liver transplantations.

Our program offers:

  • Experience: Since the 1980s, our doctors have pioneered the development of living donor liver transplantations and have even participated in the first successful U.S. procedure. This unique history gives our program an enviable level of expertise.

  • Innovation: We have helped improve recovery times by introducing minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical methods and increasing the use of left lobe grafts. Our doctors are constantly developing new and better methods of treatment.

  • Care: While we focus on producing great results during surgery, it’s also our mission to provide long-term care to all of our patients. To that end, we offer supplemental health programs and additional services like a donor mentoring program, a full-time transplant coordinator, and specialized nurses trained to handle the needs of donors and recipients.

Whether you’re interested in becoming a living donor or would like to become a recipient, we are ready to help you. Call us at (877) LIVER MD/ (877) 548-3763 or fill out our online request form to get started.

About Living Donor Liver Transplantation

A living donor liver transplantation is a surgery that removes a diseased or malfunctioning liver and replaces it with a portion of a healthy liver from a living donor. Due to the liver’s unique ability to regenerate, the partial livers of both the donor and recipient soon grow into complete organs.

Surgical Team

Jean C. Emond, MD
Vice Chair, Department of Surgery
Chief of Transplantation

Dr. Emond has spent a substantial portion of his career developing living donor liver transplantation and studying the safety of the procedure in both the donor and recipient. He participated in the first living donor liver transplant in the United States and focused on refining the techniques of performing living donor liver transplants and split liver transplants.

Tomoaki Kato, MD
Chief, Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation

Dr. Kato is known for unique and innovative surgeries for adults and children, including a six-organ transplant; a procedure called APOLT (auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation) that resuscitates a failing liver by attaching a partial donor liver, making immunosuppressant drugs unnecessary and the first successful human partial bladder transplantation involving the transplant of two kidneys together with ureters connected to a patch of the donor bladder.

Abhishek Mathur, MD

Dr. Mathur’s clinical focus includes liver transplantation with a special interest in living donor liver transplant surgery. Additionally, he treats patients with both benign and cancerous diseases of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas. He is a member of and has been nominated to serve on committees in the leading national organizations in transplantation and liver and pancreas surgery – the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and American Hepato Pancreato Biliary Association.
