Constipation

Constipation, the inability to evacuate stool, may occur for a number of reasons. Causes may include functional problems such as slow colonic transit or outlet obstruction, or structural problems such as internal rectal prolapse. The Pelvic Floor Program offers full workup including anorectal manometry, perineal EMG testing, colonic transit study, and MR defecography. Whenever possible we begin with non-surgical treatments including biofeedback and pelvic floor therapy, which are often very successful in resolving outlet obstruction constipation.

To repair internal rectal prolapse, surgery may be the best option. Rectal prolapse procedures often can be done using minimally invasive techniques. Our colorectal surgeons regularly use robotic technology that allows them to see inside the pelvis and perform very delicate procedures, including ventral mesh rectopexy. Compared to laparoscopic surgery without the robot, use of the surgical robot reduces scarring, the risk of complications, and post-operative recovery time.
