Columbia’s Division of General Surgery is dedicated to leading the field through top-quality clinical care, academic excellence, and pioneering research.

Patient Care

The General Surgery Division provides around-the-clock general surgery, trauma surgery, and other critical care surgical services. Our team has extensive experience with acute conditions like appendicitis and gallbladder attacks, as well as with much more complex diseases. Our Hernia Center specializes in both urgent and chronic hernia issues, while our Surgical Intensive Care Unit coordinates care and treatment for critically ill patients. We also provide palliative care and elective general surgery. Learn more about all of our services on our clinical care sites:

Education & Training

As a major academic institute, educating the next generation of surgeons is a cornerstone of our division. Through our residency program, doctors get comprehensive training in a variety of procedures so that they can provide the very best patient care possible, allowing them to confidently begin a career in general surgery or move on to a specialized fellowship. Our continuing education courses promote best practices to the wider medical community. Learn more about our educational and training programs:

In the direst moment during the peak of COVID-19, our surgical residents developed a 24/7 task force overnight. Anything, anywhere in the hospital, call SWAT and they were there. This is that story.
