What Is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)?

PAD—also known as lower extremity arterial occlusive disease—is a narrowing, or stenosis, of the arteries in the legs or, less commonly, the arms. This stenosis is caused by atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries caused by a fatty substance called plaque that accumulates on the inside of the arterial walls.

This disease decreases the blood supply to the muscles and tissues in the surrounding area and can result in claudication (muscle pain caused by lack of oxygen), numbness, weakness, or the feet or legs may feel cold to the touch. As PAD progresses, the skin and tissues fed by the artery may become discolored; if the blood supply is completely cut off, ulcers and gangrene (tissue death) may occur. The most severe form of PAD—critical limb ischemia—is a potentially life-threatening condition that carries a significant risk of limb loss.

Mild to moderate PAD disease can be managed with medication, lifestyle changes and exercise, and treatment for related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), and elevated cholesterol levels.

Depending on anatomy and patient risks, minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty and stenting can help restore blood flow to the affected area. In more complex anatomy or more serious cases, arterial bypass surgery may be necessary to restore healthy blood flow.
