The Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation (CLDT) in collaboration with pediatric surgery at NYP/Columbia is making noteworthy advances in the care of children with serious liver conditions, and is a national leader in this field. “Our superior outcomes are the result of unique surgical training, high patient volume, and unsurpassed multidisciplinary collaboration,” says Jean C. Emond, MD, Chief of Transplantation Services at Columbia. “The CLDT brings together leading experts hepatobiliary surgery, hepatology, gastroenterology, oncology, radiology, diagnostic testing and pathology to provide exceptional patient care.”

Columbia’s Carmen and John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics is now offering fetal intervention to repair myelomeningocele, a form of spina bifida associated with a wide range of complications including early death, paralysis, and bowel and bladder dysfunction. Prenatal intervention has been shown to significantly improve myelomeningocele outcomes by decreasing the need for cerebrospinal fluid shunting and improving motor function.

Vinayat (Vinnie) Bapat, MD, a world-renowned surgeon with expertise in open heart and minimally-invasive valve surgery, and a pioneer of transcatheter devices, has joined the faculty at NYP/Columbia.

It is difficult to cope with the death anniversary of a loved one. For Sue Mirza, it is hard to fathom that 10 years has passed since her husband, Muzzi’s death. But the opportunity to celebrate his memory with family and friends every year in the name of philanthropy gives Sue a reason to smile. This year’s annual Muzzi Invitational event will be held on September 12th at Burning Tree Country Club (120 Perkins Rd, Greenwich, CT 06830). Muzzi’s family and friends will spend the day enjoying two of Muzzi’s favorite activities-golf and cocktail parties.

Thanks in large part to the leadership of Columbia’s Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support Programs, a new left ventricular assist device, the Heartmate 3™ LVAD is now FDA approved.

A growing number of non-smoking women, many of them young, contract lung cancer every year and are often diagnosed with an advanced stage malignancy. This fall, NYP/Columbia opened the Women’s Lung and Health Center, one of only two programs in the nation to serve this under-recognized patient population.

Virendra (V) Patel, MD, MPH, a national expert in the field of vascular surgery, has joined NYP/Columbia as Chief of Vascular Surgery and Co-director of The Aortic Program. He was also named Associate Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center.

Columbia Doctors Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory has earned accreditation from the IAC (Intersocietal Accreditation Commission) on Vascular Testing. IAC accreditation is also given to medical centers dedicated to continuous advancement in this field.
